Better way to share multiple Virtual Machines in SCVMM 2012?

$
0
0

We have dozens of virtual machines that I would like to share with a particular User Role.  The training staff and managers are both Self-Service Users, with the Managers having all permissions and the trainees having limited permissions.  For example, 20 training VMs that have individual owners set, but I need to share them with the Managers user role.

Instead of going to the Properties>Access on each VM, is it possible to update the GrantedToList via PowerShell?  Or if a Training staff deploys their own Virtual Machine, they are set as the Owner.  Is there a way to automatically share it with the Manager User Role too?  I would also like to create a list of Virtual Machines that a particular User Role has access to.

Maybe I am going about this all wrong.  Any advice is appreciated.  Thank you.

SCVMM 2012 SP1 - several VM's disappear and after a while shows back for few seconds - over and over.

$

hi all,

VM's disappear from LAB hosts. those were cloned(or)imported from PROD (V2V) (and also a part of the same VMM).

I didn't made those clones\imports so I'm not sure, but maybe the GUID's are the same as the VM's from the PROD, so maybe that's what cause the VM's to disappear.

after a machine disappears under LAB host group, something strange happens: I see for few milliseconds that a machine which usually under PROD host group (with the same name as the one that disappeared) shows under this host group, that's what lead me to think that a duplicate GUID might cause that.

I haven't found anything online.

p.s - when I check those machines from the Hyper-V Manager - all the machines exists and kicking.

any help \ suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks.

Move Virtual Machine from Hyper-V Server 2008 R2 SP1 to Hyper-V Server 2012 fails with Error 2901

I have six Hyper-V 2008 R2 SP1 servers and two Hyper-V 2012 servers. I am running SCVMM 2012 SP1. I am trying to use "move virtual machine" from within SCVMM to move VMs from a 2008 host to a 2012 host. I have tried different VMs on different hosts and they all fail with this error:

==========

Error (2901)
The operation did not complete successfully because of a parameter or call sequence that is not valid.
The parameter is incorrect (0x80070057)

Recommended Action
Ensure that the parameters are valid, and then try the operation again.

==========

I have successfully created a VM on one of the 2012 hosts and moved it to the other 2012 hosts.  I can move VMs from 2008 host to 2008 host.  I just cannot move VMs from 2008 host to 2012 host.

Does SCVMM 2012 SP1 not support moving VMs from Hyper-V 2008 to Hyper-V 2012?

Move SCVMM 2012 R2 database to the SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Group

Hi

We got two node SCVMM 2012 R2 high availability server setup with 8 hosts, but the back end SQL is a standalone SQL 2012 server.

Now the management wants to move to the SCVMM database to the SQL Server AlwaysOn Availability Group. Just wondering is there any easier way to do this, Some posts recommend doing an uninstall with "Save data" option and move the database to the destination SQL cluster and then re-install SCVMM.

Get a list of static or dynamic MAC addressses

I have a hyper-v environment with system center 2012 Virtual machine manager.  I am trying to figure out a way with powershell to list all of my VM's and their MAC address with the description if they are static or dynamic.  I would like to do this on a whole and on a per HOST level.

For example, I would love to go to my host LV1PRXXXX with 50 VM's on there, run the script, and get all my 50  VM"s with their name and if they have a static or dynamic NIC.

Plus I would like to run the script that would hit all my hosts in my environment.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance!

WMI Performance Counter Error 20513

$

We're running SCVMM 2012 SP1 with CU1 on Windows 2008 R2 SP1. A handful of our hosts are showing this error

Error (20513)
The VMM management server cannot retrieve performance data for the computer VHOST1.mydomain.com. This issue may occur if the performance counter provider in the Virtual Machine Manager agent is corrupted.

Recommended Action
Restart the System Center Virtual Machine Manager Agent service on the computer NetVHB001.net.da.ocgov.com. This automatically restarts the performance provider. If the error persists, reinstall the VMM agent on the computer VHOST1.mydomain.com.

I've restarted the VMM service and uninstalled / reinstalled the Agent. Still seeing the errors. Is there another fix for this that someone has been successful with?

SCVMM Deployment Wait

After some help.

We have SCVMM 2012 R2 Setup and have created a Template for Deployment of an AD Server and a File Server. The AD Server through the use of PowerShell Scripts install AD Roles and creates a new domain which we specify in the Deployment Screen on the Service Template.

What we want to happen is Tier1 be the AD Server Deployment and then Tier 2 be our File Server deployment which doesn't start until Tier1 has completed as we need the AD server to be built. Problem we have at the moment even if we set the Deployment order of Tier2 to 2 both servers power up at the same time.

Anyone any suggestions?

SCVMM 2012, Conntect via conosle does not work when logged in with specified credentials

Hi all

I have a problem with the SCVMM 2012 console. When I start the console I select the "Specify credentials" option and then I enter my admin credentials. Afterward the console opens and everything works except the "Connect via Console" function.

When I try to connect to a VM I get the following message:
Virtual Machine Manager lost the connection to the virtual machine for one of the following reasons: Another connection was established to the console of this machine. The virtual machine has been shut down or put into the saved state. The user credentials provided do not have the necessary privilege to connect (0x0003, 0x0300)

It seems that the Virtual Machine Viewer runs not under the admin credentials which I enter at the beginning and therefore the console cannot connect.

Has someone the same issue ? Is it by design that the console connection does not work with specified credentials or is a sort of a bug or error ?

Thx

scvmm version (2008 R2, 2012 or 2012 R2) using powershell

Hi experts,

I want to get the SCVMM version (2008 R2 or 2012 or 2012 R2) installed in my Windows Server using powershell.

I used 'Get-SCVMMServer' cmdlet. But it is giving (for SCVMM 2012) as,

ServerInterfaceVersion                 : 2.1.0

How is this useful?

Is there a way to get the SCVMM version using powershell or script?

Till now i have been able to auto-provision the VMs using SCSM and Orchestrator. I would like to configure the solution to auto-expire the VMs when the user has finished using the VM for a temporary period. In SCVMM 2008 we had the feature. How can we do it in SCVMM 2012 R2?

iSCSI and ODX for VM placement

Hi,

I use a WS2012-R2 iScsi target for an Hyper-V 2012-R2 cluster managed by SCVMM 2012-R2 Rollup1.
Even so the deployment and transfers explanation states that "this destination is available for SAN migration (please see attached screen-shot)", the quick file copy isn't working and large vhd files travel across the wires when creating new VMs from templates.
ODX is supposed to help here. Is the MS iscsi target in Ws2012-R2 supporting this? If so, is there a special configuration to do somewhere? If not, what does this statement mean "this destination is available for SAN migration"?

Here the information (not error) after sucessfull but loooong VM creation:

Information (26278)
VMM could not offload transfer the file ..A to ..B

Thanks for any help.

VMM 2012R2: VMM Server, agent status: access denied

After upgrade SCVMM 2012SP1 to 2012R2 Library Server became unavailable. All library sources with status "missing".

In VMM Console (Fabric - Servers - Infrastructure) VMM Server and Library Server agent status "access denied".

Tryed to remove and add Library Server: Error 24363 VMM agent needs to be reassociated.

Reassociating with different credentials (local and domain) goes fine, but agent status still "access denied".

By the way, after upgrade SCVMM no new events in windows eventlog.

How to repair work of VMM Agent on VMM Server?

Missing tabs from VM template properties in VMM 2012 SP1

One of the VM templates stored in a library had a few properties modified (Numlock, RAM, processor count) and after saving those changes, there are several tabs missing from the properties window.  I could not reproduce this on other VM templates.  Clones of this template also have the tabs missing.

The missing tabs are OS Configuration, Application Configuration and SQL Server Configuration.

TFS 2012 lab management will not allow me to create an environment using this template, stating 'Domain User Name' is an not a valid property.

How do I get the missing tabs back?

Update Rollup 2 for SCVMM 2012 R2

$

In order to apply Update Rollup 2 one needs to first run the update on the Management Server then run the script on the Database that is holding VirtualManagerDB. I have following scenario:

An SCVMM 2012 R2 HA setup with Failover Clustering and a Standalone Library Server.

I have done the above on the active management server of SCVMM Cluster.  Now, in SCVMM Console, I can see the updated version of the active management server, but passive node still shows it to be the older along with the library server.

1.  How to apply update rollup 2 to the passive node of the scvmm cluster?

2.  How to apply update rollup 2 to the standalone library server?

3.  Do I need to just run the update rollup 2 on both server?

4.  Do I need to run the script again the VirtualManagerDB Database?

Thanks in advance.
