SCVMM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 2 Questions

$

I need to clarify few things about SCVMM 2012 R2 Update Rollup 2 application on SCVMM HA:

1.  If I have applied the udpate rollup 2 to one of the nodes and applied the script on the VirtualManagerDB, do I need to apply the update rollup 2 to the other node as well along with application of script on the VirtualManagerDB again or only applicaiton on the one node is good enough?

2.  I have applied update rollup 2 and console update for rollup 2 on one of the servers and have applied the script on the VirtualManagerDB.  After that when I push the agents, agents that are installed on the hosts are 3.2.7634 which are supposed to get installed after application of rollup 2.  But, when I look inside the console to check for the agent of both management servers, they are still 3.2.7510.  Is this normal?  Why are agents showing the old version even when the agent that they install on hosts are of updated version.  Even the library server that I added afterwards shows the new version.  All hosts in the environment show the newer version except for the VMM Management Servers?  I have verified from the console of both servers from About section, it shows the updated version too.  I have looked into the files that are modified when update rollup2 is installed and I can see that on both servers, those files get updated and are showing the correct new version, but it is not showing so in the console?

Thanks in advance.

VMM Storage Migration: failed VM, locked file

$

I have a 6 node Hyper-V 2012R2 cluster managed by VMM 2012R2 using two CSVs

for testing I have completed a couple of storage migrations of running VMs from CSV1 to CSV2.

VMM says it is all ok and completed successfully, it even shows the VM as still running.

Failover clustering shows the VM failed with even 1069 error code '0x2' "The system cannot find the file specified"

Best of all Hyper-V Manager doesnt show the VM on any of the hosts!

failover clustering then moves the VM about onto different hosts to bring it back online but this fails.

looking at the old files on CSV1 I can see there is a .BIN file left in "C:\ClusterStorage\CSV1\test3\Virtual Machines"

This file has copied to "C:\ClusterStorage\CSV2\test3\Virtual Machines"

I cannot delete the old file from the CSV1 location.

I have checked AV exceptions and they arent scanning CSV1

I have also used process explorer to see if I could see what had a lock on the BIN file but the only things I found were explorer.exe and vmms.exe on the host that was hosting the VM originally.

I have resolved this previously by rebooting all hosts in the cluster but that is not really a long term solution as the VM is offline

any suggestions?

SCVMM 2012 SP1 Host Not Responding WMI Unknown error 0xc0000bbb

Hi,

We're absolutely stumped over getting this message on some of our HP BL460c G6 hosts that we have rebuilt to Windows Server 2012 (a fully supported option).

We can add the host to SCVMM 2012 SP1 perfectly and all works well for a time and then the host goes into a "Host Not Responding" state in SCVMM.

I have followed every step in the article at:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2742246

I have also manually rebuilt the WMI repository and also the Performance Counters with no luck at all. It may work for 2-3 hours and then falls back into the problem.

This is all despite it being a completely clean build of windows and is happening on more than one of our HP G6 servers.

Can anyone help please?

Thanks,

Tim

Get-SCPerformanceData cmdlet, getting error as "argument "NetworkIOReceived" does not belong to the set "CPUUsage,MemoryUsage,StorageIOPSUsage,NetworkIOUsage,PowerSavings"

Hi,

I am using get-scperformancedata with Performance counter "NetworkIOReceived" and "NetworkIOSent".

But on client machine its failing with below error

Cannot validate argument on parameter 'Performance Counter'. The argument "NetworkIOReceived" does not belong to the set "CPUUsage,MemoryUsage,StorageIOPSUsage,NetworkIOUsage,PowerSavings" specified by the ValidateSet attribute. Supply an argument that is in the set and then try the command again.

Client is using same power shell version i.e 3.0 as I, but still its failing at client side.

What can be issue.

Everything is working fine at my end.

Creating a seperate Lab environment on a Hyper-V production Cluster

So I am sure this is answered somewhere, but I can't figure out what would be best. Here is my scenario...

I have a 3 node production cluster, and I would like to build a separate lab environment for my software team to build sharepoint. I need a couple of DC's, etc. I have more than enough resources on the nodes, but I am completely confused on what I need to do regarding the networking piece of it. I would like it to be isolated from production, but still have access to the internet. Any help would greatly appreciated.

SCVMM and SCCM 2012 R2 - Deploying VM's - Which method

$

Hi guys,

Looking at deploying SCCM 2012 R2 and SCVMM 2012 R2. I've used SCCM 2012 quite a lot in a previous environment, but not SCVMM.

I'm aware SCVMM is for bare-metal Hyper-V (as well as Xen and ESXi), and for managing the virtual environment, but do I create VM templates and create my VM Servers within SCVMM, or just the shell and PXE boot into a SCCM Task Sequence to deploy the OS?

Will also be running Orchestrator too.... So to deploy a VM would a runbook be used to create a VM shell in SCVMM, and then kick off a TS in SCCM?

Or should I be building the server templates and basically replicating some of SCCM's OSD capability for VM servers in SCVMM?

Thanks - Steve

Better way to share multiple Virtual Machines in SCVMM 2012?

$

We have dozens of virtual machines that I would like to share with a particular User Role.  The training staff and managers are both Self-Service Users, with the Managers having all permissions and the trainees having limited permissions.  For example, 20 training VMs that have individual owners set, but I need to share them with the Managers user role.

Instead of going to the Properties>Access on each VM, is it possible to update the GrantedToList via PowerShell?  Or if a Training staff deploys their own Virtual Machine, they are set as the Owner.  Is there a way to automatically share it with the Manager User Role too?  I would also like to create a list of Virtual Machines that a particular User Role has access to.

Maybe I am going about this all wrong.  Any advice is appreciated.  Thank you.

VMM 2012R2: VMM Server, agent status: access denied

After upgrade SCVMM 2012SP1 to 2012R2 Library Server became unavailable. All library sources with status "missing".

In VMM Console (Fabric - Servers - Infrastructure) VMM Server and Library Server agent status "access denied".

Tryed to remove and add Library Server: Error 24363 VMM agent needs to be reassociated.

Reassociating with different credentials (local and domain) goes fine, but agent status still "access denied".

By the way, after upgrade SCVMM no new events in windows eventlog.

How to repair work of VMM Agent on VMM Server?

Cannot Add users or groups to System Center 2012 R2 App Controller

Hi,

I am unable to add a user or group to an App Controller user role as I get the following error:

The user or group name is not valid please enter a user or group name in the format "domain\name"

Our NETBIOS domain name has an underscore in it (DOMAIN_LOCAL) which looks to be the problem (domain created before my time).

Is there any workaround for this issue?

Thanks,

Windows Azure Pack - Server returned HTTP response code: 500 error while accessing the public tenant API

$

Hi,

We are facing the following error while trying to access the given Windows Azure Pack Public tenant API to query the virtual machines list along with network adaper details -

java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 500 for URL: https://<hostname>:30006/<subscription-id>/services/systemcenter/vmm/VirtualMachines?$expand=VirtualNetworkAdapters&$top=10000&$skip=0

The response is proper when we access the following URL -

https://<hostname>:30006/<subscription-id>/services/systemcenter/vmm/VirtualMachines

Only on adding the $expand=VirtualNetworkAdapters, url parameter we are getting the above error.

Where can we check for the error logs on the Azure Pack server ? We checked for the logs using Windows Event Viewer but did not find any for the public tenant API.

What should be the cause for such an error and how can we fix this to get the proper data?

Thanks in advance.

Get-SCVMTemplate then Get-SCVirtualNetworkAdapterConfiguration result in random NIC order

Hello

I'm trying to write a script for a VM deployment from a Template.

In my Template I have 3 NICs, with only one is configured with Static IP.

My script looks like:

########### # Template # ###########
$template = Get-SCVMTemplate -All | where { $_.Name -eq $TemplateName }
$virtualMachineConfiguration = New-SCVMConfiguration -VMTemplate $template -Name $VMName

# Configure network Hardware
$AllNICConfigurations = Get-SCVirtualNetworkAdapterConfiguration -VMConfiguration $virtualMachineConfiguration
$NICConfiguration = $AllNICConfigurations[0]
Set-SCVirtualNetworkAdapterConfiguration -VirtualNetworkAdapterConfiguration $NICConfiguration -IPv4Address $IPSvc -PinIPv6AddressPool $false -PinMACAddressPool $false

# Deploy
Update-SCVMConfiguration -VMConfiguration $virtualMachineConfiguration
New-SCVirtualMachine -Name $VMName -VMConfiguration $virtualMachineConfiguration -Description "Script Generated" -BlockDynamicOptimization $false -JobGroup $JobGroupID -ReturnImmediately -StartAction "TurnOnVMIfRunningWhenVSStopped" -StopAction "SaveVM"

(it's only a part of the whole code)

However the New-SCVirtualMachine job failed sometime with

Recommended Action
Do not specify an IPv4 address or IPv4 address pool using Set-SCVirtualNetworkAdapterConfiguration, or configure the virtual network adapter for a static IPv4 address.

This really mean that sometime the network card [0] is not the static one.... but I don't find any way to identify the different adapters from the Template in order to fetch the correct one.

Does someone have an idea?

Thanks

Connecting to SCVMM remotely via install on workstation cannot run console windows to VMs (locally on scvmm it works)

We recently installed a SCVMM 2012 machine and connected it to a few HyperV2012 hosts.

From the SCVMM console locally on the machine it is installed on, I can connect to the Console of the VMs on the remote HyperV machines.  However for some reason when I run it remotely from my workstation, I can connect to SCVMM just fine, but connecting to the console of the VMs gives me the error:

Virtual Machine Manager lost the connection to the virtual machine for one of the following reasons:
Another connection was established to the console of this manchine.
The virtual machine has been shut down or put into the saved state.
The user credentials do not have the necessary privilege to connect.
0x0003, 0x0000

The firewall is not detecting any dropped packets (I enabled logging) and I am logging in with the same user as I do locally to the SCVMM server, so it is not permissions.

Any advice would be extremely helpful.  Thanks,

Nicholas

Add Updates to Baseline -> VMM UI process loop

$

Hello,

we are currently evaluating SC VMM and ran into a few problems, of them is is this:

When I try to add Updates into a baseline VMM is able to list the updates the first time.
When I close that baseline and try to add updates to another one, at the point where it should list the updates, the VmmAdminUI process goes into a loop collecting up to 2GB of memory, dropping down to 1GB and gathering memory again and finally crashing after 1 or 2 minutes.

This is reproducable in our environment and very annoying.
It's no difference wether I run the UI on the VMM Server or on my Client.

VMM in Programs and Features shows Version 3.2.7510.0, the UI shows 3.2.7634.0.

There is nothing visible in the eventlogs.

What can we do to fix this?

Thanks

Uninstall went through, but a bunch of messages came up.

Could not disconnect active SQL connection

Could not remove some file, go to "C:\ProgramFiles\System Center 2012\VMM\Bin\Something -uninstall"

Went there and there were no files.

Now I can't reinstall the darn thing, everytime I run setup it says "restart pending".

Hi All,

I am setting up SCVMM 2012 R2 in a production environment. Whenever I restart the SCVMM virtual machine the VMM service doesn't start automatically, I have to manually start it. I checked the VMM logs and in the event viewer i find the below error,

Service cannot be started. Microsoft.VirtualManager.DB.CarmineSqlException: Unable to connect to the VMM database. Ensure that the SQL Server is running and configured correctly. ---> System.Data.SqlClient.SqlException: Cannot open database "VirtualManagerDB" requested by the login. The login failed. I added the 'VMMSVC' account as db_owner and sysadmin and also NT_Authority\System with same permissions still the service doesn't start on the start up.

I googled a lot and I find the threads with the error containing "General failure" but not with the above. Can someone please help me to find out why this error is occuring.

Thanks,

Ravi

SCVMM 2012 - VM Stuck in Sysprepping

During a creation of a Template from an already Syspreped system it failed.  It's now just stuck in Sysprepping mode and will not allow me to delete it, repair it or start it.  All options are greyed out.  When I click on the VM it crashes the VMM Console.  I'm seeing event ID 1 and 19999.

How do I remove this failed VM?

Is this limitation by design? If we have a shared VHDX between two VMs, then I am not able to change the VM properties from SCVMM.
